5 tech mistakes startups make when scaling

Lessons learned from client journeys across their growth stages.

We've worked with over 50 Saudi startups across their growth journey. The technology mistakes that hurt them most aren't about technology at all — they're about timing.

1. Building too soon

Spending 6 months and 300K SAR on a custom platform before validating product-market fit. The right answer for most startups pre-Series A is no-code or low-code tools that let you test assumptions faster.

2. Not investing in infrastructure early enough

The flip side: waiting until you're at 50,000 daily users to think about scaling. AWS or Azure auto-scaling, database read replicas, and CDN should be part of your architecture from the first day you have paying customers.

3. Hiring a tech generalist when you need a specialist

A full-stack developer who's good at everything is rare and expensive. Most startups are better served by clearly scoping the technical need and hiring or contracting for that specific skill.

4. Not owning your own code

We see this regularly: a startup that worked with an agency or freelancer who holds the GitHub repository, the cloud credentials, or the domain. Always own your infrastructure from day one.

5. Choosing technology for the CV, not the problem

Using Kubernetes when you have 100 users. Using blockchain when a database would do. Using microservices when a monolith would ship 6 months faster. Technology choices should be boring and pragmatic at the early stage.
